Hornbeam Hedge or Carpinus Betulus Hedging
Carpinus Betulus or Common Hornbeam is an indigenous tree species in Britain and is one of the finest of our native hedging plants.
Dense and fast growing, Carlinus Betulus is particularly suited to shaping, trimming and creating espaliers or clear stem trees. It is hardly surprising then that it makes an excellent hedge.
Hornbeam hedges, although considered similar and often compared to Beech Hedging, are in our opinion infinitely superior plants for hedging. Hornbeams have beautiful vibrant green foliage in spring and although they are deciduous, with a summer trim the leaves will change to a beautiful tawny yellow colour in autumn and in all but the harshest winters will remain on the stems creating a lovely golden coloured hedge throughout the winter months.
With legendary hardiness, a Hornbeam hedge will grow in most well drained, moist soils and will happily grow in partial shade, although will be most luscious and fast growing in full sun.
