Carpinus Betulus Pleached Trees commonly known as Hornbeam can make a wonderful contemporary green backdrop to other smaller trees and shrubs, particularly when shaped as pleached trees. These pleached hornbeam trees have been trained on a tall clear stem frame to be used as a "hedge" above the fence or wall line (sometimes referred to as stilted hedging). These Carpinus Betulus Pleached Hornbeam Trees are trained on a clear stem onto tall bamboo frames and used as a contemporary stilted hedge or screen above the fence line. Grown in this way, Carpinus Betulus Pleached trees can also be used as a stand-alone panel to create a backdrop to a special garden ornament, urn or sculpture.
The Hornbeam tree is native to Britain. It is similar to green Beech and is often used for hedging. Hornbeams are also most suited to being pleached. Pleaching is the ancient art of training the young hornbeams trees to be grown on stilted stems or tall clear trunks with the foliage kept in a squared shape on top, above head height. Once shaped into a nice pleached form, these hornbeams are not difficult to maintain. Pleaching originated in the 17th century. Today pleached hornbeams are used to great effect in contemporary gardens to provide height and elegance while taking up minimal ground space. Carpinus Betulus Pleached Hornbeams are ideal for creating garden rooms, providing a green screen above head height, delineating pathways or guiding the eye towards a particular focal point or view.

Hornbeam is a dense, hardy hedging plant which produces attractive catkins in springtime. Although deciduous, Hornbeam leaves will generally keep their form over the harshest winter months turning a lovely copper colour. Then producing dark/mid-green dense bushy foliage in the Summer months. With a slow to medium growth rate, Hornbeams are easy to maintain, needing only an occasional trim to keep their shape.
Hornbeams prefer full sun or partial shade and are hardy. They cope well with windy positions and can be grown in heavy clay soils.
Recipient of the Award of Garden Merit by the RHS, a sure sign that it will perform well in British gardens.
