Ilex Meserveae Heckenblau, known as Blue Holly Heckenblau, is a superb evergreen holly selected for dense, refined hedging. Its German name, “Heckenblau”, literally means “Blue Hedge”, a nod to the deep blue-green gloss of its foliage and its natural aptitude for clipped boundaries. Crucially, Heckenblau is a male variety and an excellent pollinator for female hollies nearby.

This blue holly forms a compact, upright hedge with tight branching and leathery, spiny leaves that hold their colour through winter. Spring brings small, inconspicuous flowers rich in pollen; while Heckenblau itself does not fruit, it greatly improves berry set on female holly cultivars when planted in the same garden. As a hedging plant, it does not mind regular trimming to create crisp lines and formal structure, while its evergreen presence provides year-round privacy and colour.

Meserveae Heckenblau has the classic holly-type leaves being leathery with spiny, prickly edges. Compared with wild common holly (Ilex aquifolium), the spines on Meserveae hybrids such as Heckenblau are usually a little less fierce but still sharp enough to make them effective for security hedging. If clipped regularly as a hedge, the new growth tends to produce slightly softer, smaller leaves, but it remains a prickly plant overall.

Height and Width of Ilex Meserveae Heckenblau

As a free-standing shrub, Blue Holly Heckenblau typically reaches 2–3 m in height with a 1.5–2 m spread over time. In a clipped hedge, expect maintained heights from 1–2 m with proportional thickness, depending on the chosen spacing and pruning regime.

How hardy is Ilex Meserveae Heckenblau?

Blue Holly Heckenblau is fully hardy across the UK and tolerates exposed, cold sites better than many hollies, thanks to its Meserveae heritage. It performs best in moist, well-drained soil that is neutral to slightly acidic, and it copes with full sun to partial shade. Once established, it is resilient and long-lived.

Uses in Garden and/or Landscape

  • Formal evergreen hedging and property boundaries
  • Structural backdrops for mixed borders
  • Wildlife-friendly gardens — boosts berry set on female hollies
  • Screening around patios and entranceways

Care Tips

Plant Blue Holly Heckenblau in good garden soil with organic matter added at planting. Water to establish and mulch annually to conserve moisture. Trim once or twice a year to maintain a tidy line and dense surface; late spring or late summer light cuts are ideal. Avoid very chalky soils; if necessary, amend with ericaceous compost. For pollination, situate Heckenblau within the same garden as female hollies to maximise berry display.

Distinctive features & origins: Meserveae hollies, which were bred in 1950s New York by Mrs Meserve, are noted for cold tolerance and rich foliage colour, originating from breeding that combined the hardiness of rugose holly with the classic look of common holly. Heckenblau embodies this lineage with excellent hedging performance and reliable pollination.
