Juniperus squamata Blue Carpet or Blue Carpet Juniper, is a tough, easy to grow blue conifer ground cover which will grow just about anywhere! It has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit for the qualities which make it a great choice for UK gardeners.
Native to the mountains of Asia from Afghanistan to China, Juniperus squamata Blue Carpet provides a consistent evergreen ground cover all year. Its fragrant silver–blue needles turn a darker blue-green in winter but that is the only variation during the year. 
As might be expected from its Himalayan origins, Blue Carpet Juniper is extremely hardy, and will survive cold winters across the UK and northern Europe, making it the ideal evergreen ground cover. It grows extremely low to the ground, reaching a full height of 10-50 cm with a spread of 1.5-2.5 metres in 10 to 20 years. It requires no pruning. If you want to use this low maintenance plant as an extensive ground cover, space new plantings 1.5 metres apart. 
Another desirable characteristic of Juniperus squamata Blue Carpet is that it will grow almost anywhere. Plant it in full sun or partial shade, in any well-drained soil, in an exposed or sheltered position. It is tolerant of salt and so is an excellent plant for coastal areas. It will spread out to fill in the empty spot, and soften the edges of the pavement as it reaches its full size. It can also be planted in a large rock garden to provide year-round foliage to contrast with flowering plants. 
On a larger property, Juniperus squamata Blue Carpet will be an excellent ground cover on a difficult slope, never needing any maintenance or mowing. Its prickly ground-hugging growth habit would provide an excellent deterrent for deer or other intruders. It will tolerate some drought once established, so would be perfect for a dry location. Where you have a retaining wall, a few Blue Carpet Junipers planted along the top and spilling down over the stones would create a lovely picture year-round.
