Malus John Downie Pleached Crab Apple Tree
Malus John Downie, a deciduous crab apple variety long prized for its spring blossoms and autumn fruits, also makes an excellent Pleached Apple Tree, adding the element of strong architectural lines to its appeal for gardeners. Our quality specimens will take to their new location with ease, giving you a beautiful raised screen for your garden!
Malus John Downie has been widely grown in the UK since being found growing in Staffordshire in 1875. Each May, the medium-green leaves are covered in the pink flower buds which open to classic white apple blossoms with a fragrant scent. These are followed by a heavy crop of 4 cm fruits in shades of red to orange in autumn to accompany the bright autumnal foliage. Malus John Downie crab apples are considered the very best for wines and jellies.
The trained crown of the Pleached Apple Tree is held on a clear stem, giving a strong clean line. Malus John Downie is fully hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe. You will be able to maintain the already well-established shape of your pleached Apple John Downie with light pruning. Planted in full sun or partial shade in any well-drained soil, Malus John Downie will do well. Your potted specimens will arrive with a vigorous and intact root system which quickly gets established. Resistant to pollution, the Pleached Apple Tree is well-suited to city gardens large or small.
Pleached Malus John Downie is an excellent choice for a small space where an attractive screen is desired. Growing well in a container, this is an obvious choice for creating a space sheltered from view on a roof terrace or patio, or in a formal courtyard setting. Planted along a low wall, these “hedges on stilts” will add considerable height to a boundary screen. When you cannot afford the space for many specimens, the narrow, architectural lines of these Pleached Apple Trees will give you a long season of privacy, combined with beautiful spring blossoms, reliable summer foliage, and beautiful and useful autumn fruit. As well, the distinctive shape of pleached Malus John Downie provides visual interest in the winter months.
The appeal of pleached trees has never gone out of style, and Malus John Downie is an excellent choice for this landscaping technique. Use this architectural element to define boundaries and install above fence screening, combined with the beauty of living trees that provide fragrance, visual beauty, and delicious fruit!
