Musella Lasiocarpa, commonly known as the Chinese Yellow Banana and sometimes listed as Musa Lasiocarpo, is a rare and highly ornamental plant with an exotic flair. This dwarf banana, recognised with the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is admired not for fruit but for its unique architecture, lush foliage, and striking yellow blooms. Compact and unusual, it is a superb feature plant for tropical-style gardens or patio displays.
Although closely related to the banana plant, Musella belongs to a smaller genus and is often affectionately referred to as the “little banana.” Its large, paddle-shaped leaves are a vivid green and provide a bold, structural presence in the garden. The most captivating feature, however, is its extraordinary flower: a lotus-like rosette of bright golden bracts that can last for several months. These blooms appear after the plant matures and are followed by attractive leafy growth, bringing drama and elegance throughout the summer season. Unlike edible bananas, this species does not produce fruit but is grown purely for ornamental impact.
Unlike the more familiar Musa bananas that are cultivated for their edible fruit, Musella Lasiocarpa is grown purely for ornamental appeal. While both share the same lush, paddle shaped foliage, Musella is a dwarf relative with a more compact stature and produces a spectacular long lasting golden flower instead of bunches of fruit. This makes it a practical choice for gardeners who want the dramatic look of a banana plant without the need for tropical heat or the space required for full sized Musa varieties.
Height and Width of Musa Lasiocarpo:
Musella Lasiocarpa generally grows to around 1.2–1.5 metres tall and up to 1 metre wide. Its compact size makes it well-suited to smaller gardens, courtyards and container planting.
How hardy is Musa Lasiocarpo?
This Chinese Yellow Banana variety is more tolerant of cooler climates than many bananas, such as Musa Basjoo but still benefits from protection in winter. In milder regions it can be grown outdoors in sheltered, sunny positions. In colder areas it is best grown in pots and moved under cover during frosty weather, or heavily mulched at the crown to provide insulation.
Uses in Garden and/or Landscape:
Ideal for creating an exotic or tropical look, Musella Lasiocarpa works beautifully as a specimen plant in borders, on terraces, or in large containers. Its distinctive flower makes it a superb conversation piece, while the architectural leaves provide a lush backdrop to companion plantings. It pairs well with hardy palms, bamboos, and colourful perennials to create a vibrant display.
Care Tips:
Plant in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun for best results. Ensure a sheltered position away from strong winds that could damage the large leaves. Regular watering is essential during the growing season, especially in hot weather, along with a balanced fertiliser to encourage lush foliage and strong flowering. In winter, protect the crown with straw or fleece if left outdoors, or bring container plants into a frost-free environment.
