Malus Transitoria or Cut-Leaf Crab Apple Tree is a slender small species of decorative crab apple tree, extremely elegant in both growth habit, having graceful slender wide-spreading branches, masses of white blossom in spring and elegant foliage, which is narrowly lobed and has beautiful autumn colour. It received an AGM in 1993.
Malus is a large genus of over 25 species of deciduous trees known for their beautiful spring blossom and in most cases, fruit. Malus transitoria is a beautiful, small crab apple tree cultivated for its ornamental qualities.
Malus Transitoria is a slender small species of decorative apple tree, extremely elegant in both growth habit, having graceful slender wide-spreading branches and foliage, which is narrowly lobed.
Small creamy-white, star-shaped fragrant blossom emerges in April / May followed by very small yellow fruits that are very attractive. The green foliage is narrowly lobed and of graceful appearance, turning vivid colours of golden yellow in autumn. The deeply-lobed nature of the elegant foliage inspired the common name for this variety – the Cut-Leaf Crab Apple
In terms of origins, Malus Transitoria is native to North West China and was introduced to the UK in 1911 by William Purdom, the British plant hunter.
