Physocarpus Opulifolius Diabolo or Diablo

This is a really gorgeous ornamental shrub, multi-stemmed, deciduous with chocolate / purple leaves and pretty mounds of creamy white flowers.

Physocarpus is a native to Central and North America and is commonly known as Ninebark due to its exfoliating bark habit in winter, it is very hardy and grows well in the UK climate and has been awarded the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Diabolo has such unusual leaves, in addition to the chocolatey colour they are a beautiful palmate shape, not dissimilar to maples and it looks beautiful in a shrub border, underplanting trees or simply as a specimen shrub. Very easy to grow, it will thrive and reward you with masses of lovely flowers in June followed by brownish fruits. The contrast between the chocolate leaves and the corymbs of white blossom is stunning and it is so easy to grow even on clay or sandy soils and will accommodate any aspect, even north facing.

Growing Tip:
Physocarpus Diabolo will grow well in most fertile well drained soils that are neutral to acidic, plant in full sun or partial shade. Prune to shape after the shrub has finished blooming.

Please Note: Our specimens are already half the size of the mature shrub which will reach 2.5metres high x 2.5 metres wide at maturity
