Already in the UK since the mid-19th century, Pseudosasa Japonica or Bambusa Metake is a very useful and versatile variety of bamboo with a dense, upright habit and large foliage.

Bambusa Metake is a short, clump forming bamboo with olive/green canes. It has large, dark green, narrow leaves. For a bamboo, it has a medium speed of growth. It is easily maintainable as a hedge or ornamental bamboo and is very tolerant of clipping.  It likes full sun, partial shade or full shade, making it very adaptable. It will even grow in dry woodland conditions.

Bambusa Metake is extremely hardy to -24c. It grows particularly well in dry, woodland conditions. This bamboo is very suitable for hedging and evergreen screening and can be grown in containers.

Other names for Pseudosasa Japonica include Arrow Bamboo.
