Rosa Albertine is a much-loved heritage Rambling Rose, admired for its vigorous growth, richly fragrant blooms, and strong architectural presence in the garden. Introduced by the French breeder Barbier in 1921, this award-winning cultivar remains one of the most popular choices for training over walls, fences, arbours or pergolas. With its salmon-pink double flowers, intoxicating perfume, and thorny reddish stems, Rose Albertine offers both dramatic flair and old-fashioned romance.

Rose Albertine is a large, fast-growing rambling rose that brings structure and elegance to any outdoor space. Its growth is bushy and arching, with long, supple stems that are clothed in small, glossy dark green leaves. The stems themselves have a reddish hue and are notably thorny, making them excellent for providing security when grown along boundaries, but care should be taken when handling.

From early to mid-summer, large clusters of highly fragrant, double flowers unfurl in shades of rich salmon-pink. The colour deepens with age, adding to its visual appeal. The blooms have an old rose form and exude a powerful fruity fragrance, often described as one of the strongest scents among rambling roses. When in full flower, this rose is a magnet for bees and pollinators.

Unlike some more delicate Rambling Rose varieties, Rosa Albertine makes a bold and robust statement, and its flowering is concentrated in a single, show-stopping flush rather than spread throughout the season.

Height and Width of Rosa Albertine
This is a large and vigorous rambling rose, capable of reaching heights of up to 5 metres (approximately 16 feet), with a similar spread if left untrained. With support, it can be trained both vertically and horizontally, making it ideal for large garden structures.

How Hardy is Rosa Albertine?
Rosa Albertine is a hardy rose, thriving in UK climates and suitable for most parts of the country. It prefers a sunny position for optimal flowering but will tolerate partial shade. This variety is generally disease-resistant, though good air circulation will help prevent common rose issues like mildew or black spot.

Uses in Garden and/or Landscape
Rose Albertine is ideal for covering large walls, climbing through trees, or trailing over pergolas and archways. Its rapid growth and substantial coverage make it perfect for softening the look of fences or outbuildings, while its thorny stems can act as a deterrent along garden boundaries. Thanks to its spectacular flowering and rich scent, it is especially valued in cottage gardens, romantic planting schemes, or traditional rose gardens.

Care Tips
As with most ramblers, Rosa Albertine requires space to grow and strong support for its long canes. Pruning should be done after flowering in late summer—remove spent blooms and cut back one-third of the oldest stems to encourage new growth. Mulch annually with organic matter, and feed in spring with a rose fertiliser to promote healthy growth and abundant flowers. Water regularly during dry spells, especially in its first season.

Distinctive Features Compared to Other Rambling Roses
While many rambling roses offer soft pastel blooms or multi-season flowering, Rosa Albertine distinguishes itself with its uniquely deep salmon-pink colour and exceptional scent. Compared to Rosa Paul’s Himalayan Musk Rambler, which has a lighter, muskier fragrance and smaller flowers in pale pink or white, Rosa Albertine offers a bolder colour palette and more intensely perfumed bloom. Unlike Rosa Crimson Shower Rambling Rose, known for its vivid red flowers and longer flowering period, Rose Albertine has a single but more powerfully scented midsummer display. Its blend of vigour, scent, and heritage makes it a true standout among rambling varieties.

Rosa Albertine remains a timeless favourite for those seeking dramatic floral displays with an unforgettable scent – a quintessential rose for classic British gardens.
