Rosa Uetersener Klosterrose – an Apricot & Cream Climbing Rose with Monastic Charm
Rosa Uetersener Klosterrose or Rose Uetersener Klosterrose is a modern German Climbing Rose bred by Rosen Tantau and launched in 2006 to honour the historic Cistercian abbey at Uetersen. Repeating flushes of sumptuous, cupped blooms, excellent disease-resistance and a moderate growth habit make this variety a refined alternative to older climbing roses for today’s vertical spaces.
Clusters of fully double, 8 cm flowers open from pale‑yellow buds to creamy white petals lightly brushed with champagne‑apricot at the heart. Once mature, each bloom reveals golden stamens and releases a gentle sweet‑rose perfume that is noticeable without being overpowering. Flower trusses appear from June until the first frosts, backed by leathery, glossy, dark‑green foliage that shrugs off black spot and powdery mildew.
Growth is upright yet slightly arching, with stout thorny canes that lend themselves to training along pergolas, pillars or wires. Compared with classic ramblers such as Pauls Himalayan Musk (often 8 m+) or vigorous climbers like Rosa New Dawn, Rosa Uetersener Klosterrose is more compact and easier to tame, delivering a sophisticated colour palette where intense pinks or pure whites might overwhelm.
Height and Width of Rosa Uetersener Klosterrose
Expect a mature height of 3 – 4 m and a spread of around 2 – 2.5 m when grown against a support. These proportions provide ample coverage for arches and walls without the excessive pruning required by older, taller Climbing Rose cultivars.
How Hardy Is Rosa Uetersener Klosterrose?
Rated hardy to approximately −23 °C, this rose over‑winters reliably across the UK. Its modern breeding gives strong resistance to common rose diseases, reducing the need for chemical sprays.
Uses in Garden and Landscape
- Dress a brick or flint wall where the warm tones of the mortar echo the apricot flower centres.
- Frame a garden gate or arbour to create a soft, romantic entrance.
- Combine with pale‑blue clematis or lavender for a restful, monastery‑inspired palette.
- Grow in a large container with an obelisk on patios that would benefit from height and fragrance.
Care Tips
Plant Rose Uetersener Klosterrose in fertile, well‑drained soil with at least four hours of sunlight. Water deeply in its first season and apply a 5 cm mulch of well‑rotted compost each spring. Tie new shoots horizontally or in a fan shape to encourage flowering along the length of each cane. After the main summer flush, dead‑head spent trusses to promote a quick repeat. In late winter, remove dead or crossing stems and shorten lateral shoots to two or three buds. A balanced granular rose fertiliser in April and again in June sustains the plant’s long flowering period. With these simple routines, this refined Climbing Rose will reward you with cathedral‑like elegance for decades.
