Tamarix Hulsdonk White is a striking, summer-flowering deciduous shrub with cascading, plume-like white flowers and fine, feathery foliage. Unlike the more commonly seen pink tamarisks, this elegant Dutch cultivar offers a rare and refreshing alternative with its pure white floral display. Graceful, hardy, and pollinator-friendly, it’s especially well-suited to coastal gardens and low-maintenance landscapes.
This beautiful variety, synonymous with Tamarix tetrandra Hulsdonk White and Tamarix ramosissima Hulsdonk White, forms a loose, arching structure with airy, green foliage composed of needle-like leaves that resemble those of conifers. The leaves are bright green through the growing season and turn golden-yellow in autumn, extending its ornamental appeal well into the cooler months.
From mid to late summer, Tamarix Hulsdonk White produces masses of delicate, plume-like flower clusters along reddish-brown branches. These racemes of tiny, snow-white blossoms shimmer in the sunlight and attract bees and butterflies, adding movement and life to the garden. The overall effect is light, wispy, and elegant — ideal for informal settings or where a touch of softness is needed in the planting scheme.
Height and Width of Tamarix Hulsdonk White
This white flowering tamarisk will typically reach a height and spread of 2 to 3 metres. With annual pruning, it can be kept smaller and more compact, making it suitable for urban gardens or smaller plots.
How Hardy is Tamarix Hulsdonk White?
Tamarix Hulsdonk White is moderately hardy in the UK and performs best in sheltered locations. While slightly less winter-hardy than other tamarisk species, it will thrive in mild coastal climates. It tolerates drought, salty winds, and poor soils, provided the site is well-drained.
Uses in Garden and Landscape
This Tamarix variety is particularly useful in coastal gardens where other shrubs may struggle. It performs beautifully as a specimen shrub or when planted in loose groups for a naturalistic effect. Its arching habit and cloud-like flowers make it ideal for softening fence lines, garden boundaries, or larger mixed borders. White Flowering Tamarix is also a great choice for wildlife gardens thanks to its bee- and butterfly-attracting flowers.
Care Tips
Plant in full sun and well-drained soil for best results. Prune back hard in early spring (March) to maintain a compact form and encourage vigorous new growth. While drought-tolerant once established, occasional watering during prolonged dry spells will help flowering performance. It requires minimal fertilisation and little care beyond annual pruning.
Originally bred in the Netherlands, Tamarix Hulsdonk White is a rare and refined cultivar that stands apart from other tamarisks due to its unique white flowers and distinctive conifer-like foliage. Its ability to thrive in tough environments while remaining visually graceful makes it a superb addition to a variety of garden styles.
