Thuja Plicata Whipcord or Western Red Cedar Whipcord
Pretty but tough, Thuja Plicata evergreen conifers originate all along the Pacific coast of North America, spanning from the harsh and cold coasts of Alaska all the way down to warm and sunny California. This particular variety, Thuja Plicata Whipcord, originated in 1986 in Oregon as a seedling found by Barbara Hupp of Drakes Crossing Nursery. It is a low-growing, rounded conifer shrub with long, thick glossy whipcord-like tendrils that are green for the better part of the year but turn to a striking bronze as the temperatures drop. The needles are soft and very ornamental, thanks to their unusual texture, colour and elegant weeping habit.

Height and Spread of Thuja Plicata Whipcord
Compact and slow-growing, Western Red Cedar Whipcord will achieve a maximum height and width of 1 to 1.5 metres in a period of 10 to 20 years.

How Hardy is Thuja Plicata Whipcord
Western Red Cedar Whipcord is fully hardy in the United Kingdom. It is generally disease resistant. Additionally, Thuja Plicata varieties are more drought tolerant than the Northern White Cedar varieties, so dryer conditions will not bother this compact conifer.

How To Use Thuja Plicata Whipcord
Unusual foliage that stands out in the landscape makes Western Red Cedar Whipcord a great choice as a specimen plant with year-round interest. Alternatively, you can use it to add texture to a mixed shrub border or plant en masse as a striking ornamental evergreen screen.

How To Care For Thuja Plicata Whipcord
Western Red Cedar Whipcord is easy to grow and to care for. To achieve the best results, plant it in a sunny spot as it will encourage a more vibrant foliage colour. The soil should be moist but well-drained, with a neutral to slightly acidic pH value.
