Berberis Thunbergii Pow Wow is a recent introduction to the Berberis (Japanese Barberry) family. Berberis Pow Wow is a deciduous compact shrub that has a slender, narrow upright growth habit. Each spring, it produces golden yellow leaves splashed with cream, along with tiny red flowers. The leaves turn a vivid lime green in summer and small fruits emerge in June which ripen to red. This is followed by intense autumn foliage colour ranging from orange to pink to reds and purples. With such ever-changing leaf colour as the seasons progress, together with its flowers, its fruit and it elegant shape, this shrub offers year round interest and high ornamental value. It is a most attractive shrub to have in the garden.

In terms of size, Berberis Thunbergii Pow Wow will attain a height of circa 1 metre with a spread of half a metre over time. It won’t get overly large.

In terms of aspect, Berberis Pow Wow likes full sun but it will also grow perfectly well in more shaded positions. However, keep in mind that autumn colour and fruits tend to be more striking if Pow Wow is exposed to direct sunlight.

Defensive Hedges
Prickly Berberis shrubs are very often used as a defensive hedging because of their dense growth habit and most importantly their sharp barbs, characteristic of the Berberis family. Use Berberis thunbergii Pow Wow as a low hedge, particularly where you want to limit footfall or keep out unwanted intruders or animals, due to the very sharp spines. Consider also as part of an ornamental mixed hedge

Berberis Pow Wow can be pruned or trained to your desired height or shape. Do be careful when you prune them – which you should never do without protective garden gloves. Never pick up the branches with bare hands as the spines can get under the skin and break off.

Berberis thunbergii (Japanese Barberry) are popular as they are low maintenance shrubs with high decorative value contributed by the flowers in spring, fruits in summer and beautiful colours in autumn. Easy to look after, Berberis thunbergii Pow Wow will grow in almost all types of soil and is tolerant of urban pollution. Berberis thunbergii Pow Wow is frost hardy.

Apart from hedging, other uses for this low growing berberis shrub include rock gardens, small gardens, embankments, isolated groups, flowerbeds and borders.
