Azalea Japoncia Purple Splendor is a low growing, evergreen ornamental shrub, with small oval green leaves, turning orange in autumn. It blooms in late spring or early summer and produces long-lasting flowers. The flowers are quite a splendid pink magenta. American variety ‘Purple Splendor’ is not to be confused with the English variety ‘Purple Splendour’ which though similar has purple rather than vivid pink flowers.
Azalea Japonica Purple Splendor is not an overly large shrub, making it a good choice for smaller gardens. As it grows a little bit faster than other azalea varieties, it will quite quickly reach it’s a maximum height of 0.8 metres and 1.5 metre spread.
Thanks to lovely bloom and evergreen foliage providing interest all year round Azalea Japonica Purple Splendor is a perfect choice for mixed borders, ground cover or containers. It’s a nice addition to the garden due to its low-growing habit and spread. When in flower, it looks spectacular.
Purple Splendor prefers acidic, moist, free-draining soil. In terms of aspect, it is quite versatile and will grow in full sun or partial shade.
