Choisya Ternata (Mexican Orange Blossom) originates from Mexico. But is UK hardy and is frost tolerant to circa -10 degrees. This lovely, low-growing shrub however works best in gardens sheltered from cold winds and when planted in a nice, sunny spot.
Choisya Ternata (Mexican Orange Blossom) has beautiful, glossy evergreen foliage that stays a dark green all year round and it is covered in flowers in early summer. The starry white flowers are highly fragrant and because of their resemblance to orange blossom, hence the common name Mexican Orange Blossom. As the plant matures, the lovely fragrant flowers become ever more profuse.
Choisya Ternata only requires a trim once per year to keep it in shape, and this is best undertaken at the end of the growing season. After a trim, the leaves which are also fragrant, exude a lovely citrusy smell in the garden.
Choisya Ternata (Mexican Orange Blossom) lends itself to trimming and re-grows very well. Consequently, it is highly suited for use as a fragrant, evergreen hedge. A Choisya Ternata hedge, once established can reach heights of about 2 metres.
Choisya Ternata is not fussy about soil type and can be considered a low-maintenance plant.
The Royal Horticultural Society has given Choisya Ternata its Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
