Fargesia Nitida Black Pearl, or Fountain Bamboo Black Pearl, is an elegant clump-forming umbrella bamboo distinguished by its dark purple culms. This fast-growing new hybrid is the perfect choice if you want a really tall evergreen screen fast!
Native to China, Fountain Bamboo will grow quickly in height but at the same time not spread quickly, making it an ideal choice for gardens large and small. The canes of Fargesia Nitida Black Pearl are sometimes a dark purple, almost black shade, contrasting beautifully with the narrow, bright green leaves produced in profusion. Upright with an arching effect at the top, giving it the name Fountain Bamboo, and its elegant appearance will work well in both formal settings and country gardens.
Hardy in most parts of the UK, Fargesia Nitida Black Pearl will quickly grow to a mature height of 2.5-4 metres and spread of 1-1.5 metres. Cut out dead or damaged canes, and thin in spring. Remove flowering stems immediately. After a few years the rhizomes can be divided in spring. Space Fountain Bamboo Black Pearl plants a metre apart if planted as a hedge.
Plant Fargesia Nitida Black Pearl in full sun or partial shade, in moist loam or clay soil in a sheltered or exposed position, although it should be protected from drying winds in coastal regions. It is generally disease free, but new shoots may be susceptible to slugs. Both deer resistant and tolerant of pollution, Fountain Bamboo Black Pearl can be used in a variety of planting situations.
Fountain Bamboo Black Pearl is a good choice for container planting on a rooftop terrace or in a courtyard garden, where its restrained growth habit will be appreciated, while the colourful culms and evergreen foliage will provide year-round visual interest and privacy screening. It’s an excellent choice for a fast-growing hedge along the edge of a city garden, creating a private oasis away from the street traffic in a few short years. In a country garden, a clump of several Fargesia Nitida Black Pearl would create a striking focal point, while one specimen plant would be an excellent addition at the back of a mixed border, where it would provide reliable year-round visual interest.
Fargesia Nitida Black Pearl combines the desirable characteristics of quick growth to mature height while at the same time staying within bounds. It’s an excellent, low-maintenance hedging choice for the UK garden!
