Juniperus Squamata Meyeri is an evergreen conifer with stiff arching branches covered in blue-grey needles. It’s a low growing cultivar that’s more like a shrub than a tree and excellent in rock gardens or low maintenance spots where it brings year-round colour with little effort.

Juniperus Squamata is a conifer that originates from high altitudes places in Asia. It’s known for its stiff blue needles and is popularly called Flaky Juniper, Nepalese Juniper, or Himalayan Juniper. It’s a productive parent plant that’s given rise to a number of cultivars including Juniperus Squamata Blue Star and Juniperus Squamata Blue Carpet

Flaky Juniper Meyer is a medium-sized blue conifer with upright arching branches and dense, striking dark blue needles. It was found in cultivation in China in the early 1900s by American plant hunter Frank Meyer. Meyer named it after himself and brought it back to the West where it’s popular for its hardy nature and ability to fill a large space with glowing blue tones without getting too tall.

This is a great choice for Japanese style gardens, rock or gravel gardens, slopes, low maintenance areas, and that spot in the border that always looks in need of a colour boost.

Height And Spread of Juniperus Squamata Meyeri
This is a mid-sized blue conifer that reaches a height of three metres and spreads over 1.5 metres in 10 years. It’s more of a shrub than a tree.

How Hardy Is Juniperus Squamata Meyeri
Flaky Juniper Meyer is hardy given its high-altitude origins. It copes well with drought and exposed spots if its roots are well-drained.

How To Use Juniperus Squamata Meyeri
Flaky Juniper Meyer is best used in a low maintenance garden that needs year-round colour. It fills a spot in the border, copes well in a polluted front garden, and when grown with other evergreen conifers brings a wide splash of ornamental blue.

It’s suitable for rock gardens, gravel gardens, front gardens and wildlife-friendly areas in both country and urban gardens.

How To Care For Juniperus Squamata Meyeri
Flaky Juniper Meyer prefers a sunny to partly shaded position in any type of well-drained soil including chalk. It copes well with exposed areas but will produce the best silvery blue in sunny sites.
Pruning isn’t required, but you can maintain its height and spread in early spring before new growth appears if necessary. Water it well until established and apply a thick layer of well-rotted mulch to the roots in spring.
