Ligustrum Ovalifolium Aureum (also named Golden Privet) is the golden, variegated variety of the much loved green leaved Ligustrum Ovalifolium (Hedging Privet). Golden Privet is a semi evergreen shrub that makes a beautiful dense hedge. The leaves are small, yellow and oval-shaped with a green margin in the centre. In summer, Ligustrum Ovalifolium Aureum produces small white scented flowers, followed by black fruits in late summer or autumn.
Ligustrum Ovalifolium Aureum can be planted in full sun or partial shade. This is useful to know, particularly for those difficult to fill shady spots. Golden Privet will grow in any moist, well-drained, fertile soil. This is a resilient and hardy shrub with lots of versatility. Stand-alone and unclipped as an informal shrub, its golden foliage is most attractive and its summer flowers and autumn fruits will attract pollinators and birds aplenty. Its merits as a formal hedge are well known, particularly here in the UK where it is very popular.
Ligustrum Ovalifolium Aureum can reach a maximum height of 3 to 5 metres with a maximum spread 3 to 4 metres. However, like its green cousin Privet, Golden Privet is happy to be clipped several times per year and can be kept to whatever size and width of hedge you require.
Ligustrum Ovalifolium Aureum has achieved the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
