Superba is a new introduction of deciduous Magnolia, more free flowering than the popular Magnolia Soulangeana and also flowering more freely from a younger age. Magnolia Soulangeana Alba Superba is a lovely shaped tree, working well in small gardens. Suberba has large tulip shaped goblets of creamy rose pink flowers borne along bare stems in April/May. The mid-sized dark green leaves appear after flowering.
Magnolia Soulangeana Superba grows to a height of around 3-4 metres. Grow in neutral to acidic soil in a sunny to semi shaded spot. It has a naturally elegant shape without requiring any pruning and its growth habit is more upright than wide spreading. This is indeed a most useful trait for smaller gardens.
Magnolias are wonderful free flowering small trees which provide early colour for your garden. Try planting combinations of dwarf or low growing shrubs underneath Magnolias to provide colour through the whole year especially through the winter. See Plants we recommend below - consider evergreen azalea japonica and or dwarf varieties of rhododendrons such as Fred Peste. Primula Denticulata, also known as the Drumstick Primrose is also an excellent choice for underplanting.
