Fagus Sylvatica Atropunicea. Commonly known as Purple Beech

As a stand-alone Tree:
Fagus Sylvatica Atropunicea  is a magnificent tree or it can also be grown as a colourful hedgerow, the purple majestic beech-leaf can be seen in absolute contrast to the myriad of greens in the UK landscape. As a specimen tree it was often used by Capability Brown and has become a firm favourite for woodland style planting, due largely to its spectacular foliage colour. Plant this tree strategically to get the most WOW factor. As this is a large broad leaf tree it is not a suitable choice for small gardens but will thrive where it has room to grow and achieve its full potential.

As an attractive Hedging Plant:
In contrast Fagus Sylvatica Atropunicea grown for hedging is easily managed by regular pruning this cultivar maintains its deep purple colour throughout the year, unlike the more common Copper Beech Fagus Sylvatica Atropurpurea which can fade to green in the summer. Can be attractive when planted with alternate green hedging to create an ornamental hedge of purple and bright green - a Grisselinia is a good contrast for this.

A purely purple beech hedge is a thing of beauty and will be appreciated by nesting birds in the summer. For a super stunning design element use purple beech to create a mini maze or for screening off 'garden rooms' such as an outdoor seating area or for dividing flowers and a potager area. The possibilities are endless.

Growing Tip: Good growing conditions for beech are well draining rich soils and in a sunny open aspect
