Phormium Tenax is more commonly known as New Zealand Flax. It is a green- leaved, clump-forming perennial with upright narrow leaves, producing very striking red flowers from July to August. The blossoms are not only striking, but also produce nectar which will attract songbirds, warblers, and other nectar-feeding birds. This hardy perennial brings year-round interest to the garden and makes a spectacular architectural addition to your planting.

If you prefer something even showier for your garden, this ornamental grass is also available as a variegated phormium.

Height and Spread of Phormium Tenax
In some situations, New Zealand Flax can grow to be up to 4 metres high with a 2-metre spread. Our specimens are mature, ranging from 1 to 1.25 metres.

How Hardy Is Phormium Tenax
Although originally from New Zealand this variety is completely frost hardy and grows happily in the UK climate. It is especially thriving in coastal areas where they have become very popular.

How To Use Phormium Tenax
The year-round interest of the New Zealand Flax makes it an ideal candidate for a mixed shrub border, where it will add architectural value with its sharp erect foliage. The exotic look of this perennial also makes it a good choice for Mediterranean gardens. Since New Zealand Flax can be grown in large containers, you can use it to spruce up your patio or rooftop garden, too.

How To Care for Phormium Tenax
Phormium Tenax prefers to be planted in full sun but will tolerate partial shade. Grow in average, well-drained but moist soil.
