Solanum Jasminoides Album, commonly known as the Potato Vine, is a vigorous semi-evergreen climber prized for its clouds of highly fragrant, star-shaped white flowers with yellow centres. Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit, it brings reliable summer-long colour and fragrance to sunny walls, fences, and trellises.
This fast-growing climber produces glossy, dark green leaves that set off its profusion of delicate white flowers, appearing from June to September. As the season closes, clusters of small black berries add autumnal interest. Native to South America, Solanum Album is a tender species. it is often compared to jasmine for its fragrance but is distinct in its looser, airy form. The elegant growth habit of the Potato Vine makes it ideal for softening vertical structures and combining beautifully with other sun-loving climbers such as clematis or climbing roses. It also pairs elegantly with softer-textured foliage plants like ornamental grasses.
Height and Spread of Solanum Jasminoides Album:
Reaching up to 6 metres (20 feet) in height and spreading around 3 metres (10 feet), Solanum Album thrives in sheltered, sunny positions.
How Hardy is Solanum Jasminoides Album?
While semi-evergreen in mild regions, the Potato Vine may lose foliage in colder winters. Protect from frost and plant in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.
Uses in Garden and Landscape:
Solanum Album is a perfect climber for training against warm walls, pergolas, or fences. As the Potato Vine creates a cascade of flowers all summer, its fragrance and nectar-rich blooms are a magnet for pollinators. It pairs elegantly with climbing roses, where its fresh white star-flowers offset deeper pink or red tones. It also works beautifully with silver-leaved perennials for a Mediterranean effect.
Care Tips:
Plant in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, with shelter from cold winds. Provide strong support for its vigorous growth. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain size and encourage fresh flowering shoots. Water regularly in dry periods and feed with a balanced fertiliser during the growing season to sustain its abundant flowering.
