Also known as Luteum, Azalea Pontica is a medium sized deciduous azalea. This is not a hybrid but rather a deciduous azalea species. Deciduous Azalea Species (rather than the hybrids such as the Exbury Azaleas) are becoming ever more popular. The flowers tend to be scented and arrive late rather than early, thereby extending the season. Most are hardy and many, such as this, have autumn colour.
Azalea Pontica is a beautiful, fast growing, deciduous azalea that will give a wonderful display of fragrant, yellow, funnel-shaped flowers with a sweet scent in late spring into early summer. It has mid-green foliage that changes to a vibrant purple-crimson and orange in autumn. Azalea Pontica, also called Rhododendron Luteum, will give the garden lots of exciting colours through spring, summer and autumn.
This plant is particularly suited to growing in our UK climate and is ideal for mixed borders or when planted to achieve a woodland effect, as these azaleas do prefer partial shady spots. However, as long as the soil is well drained and acidic, it will thrive and tolerate full sun.
Make sure to avoid planting too deeply and apply a mix and mulch every spring.
Max height and spread in 10-20 years 2.5-3 metres.
