Ilex Crenata Convexa Topiary Pom Pom
Native to Japan, evergreen Ilex Crenata or Japanese Holly has small round rich green leaves. In many ways, it is not dissimilar to Buxus Sempervirens or boxwood plants. Slow-growing and compact, Ilex Crenata is ideal for topiary. The new growth is a pale green and contrasts beautifully with the darker older foliage. These beautiful topiary specimens are mature topiary Ilex Crenata plants shaped like a pom pom as the topiary balls at the end of each branch are like a collection of pom poms. These topiary specimens are circa 1 metre high so not very tall, hence the reference to ‘bonsai’. This is sometimes referred to as a garden bonsai size.
These Ilex Crenata Topiary Pom Pom (Japanese Holly topiary) are surprisingly easy to maintain, requiring trimming once to twice per year to keep them in shape, ideally in May and again in September. Just use a garden shears to maintain the shape.
Ilex Crenata Pom Pom is a beautiful garden bonsai that can really add a point of focus in your garden, on the patio or balcony or anywhere you would like to add a cute topiary. It is a favourite as a topiary in its native Japan. It can be clipped but twice a year in the early spring or late summer to encourage and form the shape.
A member of the Aquifoliaceae Family, the Genus Ilex comes in several forms. The Convexa variety, , is a native of China and Japan. Low growing and compact, these evergreen trees actually behave like shrubs in a tree form. This creates a unique and special look to wherever you grow them. The name Pom Pom relates to the shapes it takes at the end of each of its branches, forming globes of beautiful foliage. It produces numerous, very small, whitish flowers followed by a black berry in the autumn. Only growing to about 1 metre in height, they are categorized as a ‘garden bonsai’. Grown in the soil, they can create an interesting focal point among other materials you plant along with them, or grow them in containers for the Patio and other locations.
Hardy to Zone H6 in the UK and Ireland, this garden bonsai prefers an exposure offering full sun, with Aspect preferences from North to East to South or to West facing. They can tolerate sheltered or exposed positions, and need well drained soil that also can hold moisture. Any texture of chalk, clay, sand, or loam is fine, with pH near neutral, slightly acid, or slightly alkaline are all fine.
