Pinus Banksiana Bonsai-style Topiary
Left to its own devices, Pinus Banksiana also called Jack Pine is a compact medium growth rate evergreen conifer with light-dark green needle shaped foliage. What is unusual about these mature conifer trees is they have been shaped & grown in the style of a small cloud tree (hence the reference to ‘bonsai’). This trademark look is achieved by using the ancient Japanese art of Niwaki, a method of growing and shaping trees into a sculpture-like form, with multiple crowns that resemble clouds. These ethereal and unique topiary ornamental trees are usually trimmed and formed over a period of over 20 years, but, once shaped, they need very little maintenance to keep their dreamy looks. So, they are not actually bonsai trees they are bonsai-style small topiary trees at circa 1.5 metre high so really not very tall but highly ornamental due to the complex topiary shape. It is surprisingly easy to maintain the shape with an annual clip.

Although Jack Pine can grow to be up to 15 meters high in its natural habitat, this bonsai-styled Pinus Banksiana topiary will stay circa 1.5 meters high if routinely trimmed. Since it stays compact, it is perfectly suited for growing in large containers or in evergreen shrub borders. Highly ornamental and showy, Jack Pine topiary will be the center of attention no matter what location you choose, whether in the garden, patio or balcony.

When it comes to pruning, this stunning Jack Pine Topiary will need just an annual clip. Prune as new growth emerges with a pair garden scissors, or by using fingers just pinching out the bottom of the new shoot.

This Pinus Banksiana Topiary likes full sun and grows best in sandy loam soil, but will tolerate well drained moist fertile soils.
