Quercus Palustris, more commonly known as Swamp Spanish Oak or Pin Oak, is a large deciduous tree with spectacular foliage. Noted for its unusually shaped leaves and stunning fall colour, Pin Oak is an ideal candidate for a specimen tree.
The smooth, deeply lobed, pointed leaves of Quercus Palustris start out bright green in the spring, turning to spectacular shades of reddish-brown and crimson red during autumn. Although the peculiar foliage of Pin Oak is what its best known for, this strong-growing tree is quite striking even when the leaves drop in the winter. Greyish and smooth, the bark becomes ridged with age. The upper branches of Quercus Palustris are swept upward, the middle branches slightly horizontal, and the lower branches slightly pendulous, becoming more drooping as the tree matures. Even though they’re not quite noticeable in the lush foliage, Pin Oak bears drooping catkins in the spring, followed by rounded acorns in the autumn.
Tall, with a broad, pyramidal crown, Swamp Spanish Oak can grow to be higher than 15 metres and wider than 8 metres, when fully established. Considering that this deciduous tree is really long-lived, expected age for achieving its ultimate height and width is over 50 years.
Native to North America, Swamp Spanish Oak is fully hardy in all of the UK. Easy to grow, it prefers full sun to partial shade and moist, acidic soil with good drainage. This deciduous tree naturally occurs in wet soils, so it can tolerate poorly drained soils and floods, when mature. When choosing a location for planting Pin Oak, make sure the soil is deep enough and that there’s enough space for this large tree to fully develop over the years. Generally considered healthy and robust, this tree is relatively resistant to pest and diseases. Due to its attractive features and all around great value, Pine Oak is one of the most widely grown commercial oak tree variety. Swamp Spanish Oak is also the recipient of the Award of Garden Merit by Royal Horticultural Society.
Stunning and virtually indestructible when established, Pin Oak is a popular choice for a specimen tree. Its unusual, lobed leaves draw attention in spring and summer, and in the fall, the fiery foliage of this large tree completely steals the spotlight.
