Helleborus Double Ellen Purple Hellebore
Helleborus Double Ellen Purple is a striking winter-flowering perennial with rich dark purple-coloured flowers and yellow centres. It suits shady areas, containers and winter gardens. Hellebores are winter-flowering plants commonly known as the Christmas Rose in a nod to their flowering period. They are part of the Ranunculaceae buttercup family and will flower up to three months at a time.

The Double Ellen variety of hellebore is a new double-flowered Orientalis hybrid from Dutch breeder Ellen Akerboom. Double Ellen Purple is a dramatic variety with unusual double flowers and clump-forming dark-green lobed leaves. In early winter Helleborus Double Ellen Purple produces large double purple flowers with ruffled edges. Flowers appear on upright stems that stand above the foliage and provide essential nectar for winter pollinators. The attractive dark green foliage is generally evergreen. This, together with the low growing habit of Hellebores makes it a good ground cover plant for shady areas of the gatden.

Height and Spread of Hellebore Double Ellen Purple
Hellebore Double Ellen Purple is a clump-forming plant that will reach around 35 cms tall and the same across. It will spread if left undisturbed.

How Hardy Is Hellebore Double Ellen Purple
Helleborus Double Ellen Purple is hardy and able to withstand minus degree temperatures if its roots are well-drained. It does not like hot sun and prefers dappled to total shade.

How To Use Hellebore Double Ellen Purple
Hellebores are an essential part of a year-round wildlife garden. Double Ellen’s long-lasting, open-cupped winter flowers provide nectar for late pollinators and it’s clump-forming foliage provides a habitat for insects.  Helleborus Double Ellen Purple creates attractive ground cover in shady areas and fills empty spaces beneath shrubs. Pair with red-stemmed dogwoods for a vibrant winter effect. Hellebores are especially attractive planted in a group, so we also stock Double Ellen White, Pink Spotted and Double Ellen Red varieties.
You can grow Helleborus Double Ellen Purple in a large container or pot paired with early spring bulbs such as crocus for a flowering display that blooms for months at a time.

How To Care For Hellebore Double Ellen Purple
Helleborus are low maintenance plants and will grow in the majority of soils including chalk.
Helleborus Double Ellen Purple will thrive in moist shade and does best under existing shrubs. Apply a thick layer of mulch to the roots in autumn to trap moisture and provide nutrients.
There is no need to prune, but when flowers appear you can cut back lower foliage to better show off the blooms.
