Wollemi Pine - Wollemia Nobilis
One of the world's oldest and rarest trees the Wollemi Pine belongs to the 200 million year old Araucariaceae family. The Wollemi Pine is a conifer with attractive, unusually dark green foliage, bubbly bark and sprouts multiple trunks. The Wollemia Nobilis is fast growing in good light conditions and tends to favour acid soils and temperatures from -5 - 45°C.
Often called “the ultimate survivor”, Wollemia Nobilis is unusually versatile and easy to care for. This unique conifer prefers neutral to acid soil that is moist but well-drained. The Wollemi Pine thrives in partial shade, although it can adapt to full sun. However, if you chose a sunny spot for this evergreen tree, you should expect foliage yellowing, in case the tree is not sheltered from the direct sunlight. If not severely burnt by the sun, foliage usually regains its deep green colour in a few months.
The Wollemi Pine can also be grown indefinitely in pots, both outdoors and indoors. In case you plan on growing this rare conifer inside your home, choose a spot near a window or doorway, to ensure the plant is getting enough natural light. Also, make sure to take it out in a shaded spot outdoors every few weeks (ideally, one week out of every month). When it comes to caring for Wollemia Nobilis in a pot, apart from a good position, it’s important not to overwater it. The plant should be watered only when you notice the soil in the pot is already dry.
Discovered in the Australian rainforest in 1994, Wollemia Nobilis has been around even 90 million years ago (it was presumed extinct). Even though it’s considered rare and endangered, the Wollemi Pine is quite adaptable, and fully hardy throughout most of the United Kingdom. However, as it originates in Australia, where the temperature range it survived was -5 to 45 degrees, this conifer may not survive winters where temperatures drop below -10 degrees.
The largest wild Wollemi Pine in the rainforest gorge is 40m tall with a main trunk of 1.2m wide.Conservation Royalties from sales of the Wollemi Pine go to support the conservation of the Wollemi Pine growing in the wild and other rare and endangered plant species. These rare Wollemia are a unique gift idea for special occasions. They are ideal as stunning patio and indoor plants and /or as a feature tree for parks and large gardens.
