Prunus Laurocerasus Etna Standard and Half Standard Trees
These Prunus Laurocerasus Etna or Cherry Laurel Etna trees have been trained as standard and half standard trees so they grow as compact evergreen trees with a rounded crown on a single clear stem.
Prunus Laurocerasus Etna is a variety of evergreen laurel. Its foliage is a dark, glossy green when mature. Each leaf is oblong and features a serrated edge. As new leaves emerge, they have a lovely bronze hue that stands out in stark contrast against the older leathery foliage to create visual interest. When crushed, the foliage of Laurel Etna smells similar to almonds.
In the spring months, buds start to appear on Prunus Laurocerasus Etna. The buds unfurl in late spring to early summer to produce a bevy of sweet-scented flower clusters that attract butterflies and bees to the garden. Each raceme contains thirty to forty flowers that measure approximately 1 centimeter across. The blossoms are a creamy white with bright yellow stamens.
After flowering, small red fruits appear on Prunus Laurocerasus Etna. Each fruit measures only 1 to 2 centimeters across. As the fruit matures, it turns a dark burgundy to blackish colour and often persists on the tree into the early months of winter. The berries are a favourite food source for hungry birds as the weather starts to change in the autumn.
These Standard Cherry Laurel Etna Trees grow best in full sun or partial shade. Cherry Laurel Etna tolerates chalk, clay, or loam well. Soil pH does not seem to have an effect on the tree, it will grow in acidic, neutral or alkaline conditions. Choose a planting location that provides deep, fertile soil. Prunus Laurocerasus Etna Standard does not tolerate standing water around its roots, so make sure that the planting site is well-draining.
During the first year after planting, keep the roots moist but not excessively wet to encourage the tree to develop a deep, strong root system. Once established, it will tolerate moderate drought.
A slower grower, the overall shape and size of these Standard Cherry Laurel Etna trees is relatively easy to maintain through occasional pruning. In spring, they will benefit from an application of a general purpose fertilizer before new growth appears.
Our Prunus Laurocerasus Etna Standards are low maintenance and compact trees that looks good all year round. They can be planted in any garden where the lovely green foliage will be appreciated and the soft scent of its flowers enjoyed. Because of the neat standard tree shape, these Cherry Laurel Etna trees will also fit smaller gardens or spaces. We have many other Laurel trees in standard form including Portuguese Laurel Standard Trees and Cherry Laurel standard trees and Laurus Nobilis standards. The variety Prunus Laurocerasus Etna is also available as a hedging shrub.
