Chamaecyparis – such a versatile Conifer
Commonly known as False Cypress or just ‘Cypress’ this amazing group of Conifers are fabulous to plant as specimen trees and some of the dwarf conifers are slow growing varieties which make them perfect additions to the rock garden or border. Over the years we’ve added more and more Chamaecyparis to our Conifer collection and we’re pleased that we now have probably the largest collection of Conifer varieties, especially the more mature trees in London and the South East.
Chamaecyparis varieties are found in the wild in many countries, from North America to Asia, where they are appreciated for their beautiful form, shape and variations. These accommodating trees are easy to grow and are very easy to train and are often the tree of choice for creating Niwaki trees – also referred to as garden bonsai. The intricate shapes – especially the cloud tree variations originate from the Far East and decorative topiary shapes using Chamaecyparis are popular in many US and Western European gardens.

Chamaecyparis Obtusa Nana – Hinoki Cypress – awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit – a sure sign it will perform well in UK gardens
In Japan, the wood from the Hinoki Cypress tree is highly prized and is commonly known as the go-shin-boku “divine tree” – wood from this tree is used for building temples. Hinoki Cypress is a very pretty conifer that is relatively slow growing, evergreen and forms very unusual leaf formations creating ‘waves’ of stunning green foliage which retain their colour and form throughout the year.

Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Ivonne – Topiary Trees
Lawson’s Cypress ‘Ivonne’ is such a versatile tree – as you can see from these images – happily creating two entirely different shaped topiary trees – Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Ivonne Pom Pom topiary, with its mini-cloud tree formation and the beautifully, full shaped Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Ivonne Topiary Spiral – these stunning spiral topiary trees are mature specimens and are already 15 years old – standing at 1.75-2m (5ft 8-6ft 6) tall – they will create instant impact in your garden.

Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Alumigold Topiary Tree
Also referred to as Chamaecyparis Alumii Gold or Chamaecyparis Alumni Gold – yes we know, very confusing… but these beautiful trees are fabulous either side of an entrance door (they grow well in containers) or in the border or as part of a topiary garden or display. Once again Chamaecyparis’ displays just how forgiving they are in terms of training and trimming – a neat trim once or twice a year is all that’s needed to keep these beautiful specimens in top shape.
Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Alumigold Topiary Trees These half standard trees are 1.65m (5ft 4) tall – the image shows the actual size of the trees in this offer.
As you can see from the plants above – the colour of Chamaecyparis varies greatly and it is this variation in colours from one variety to another that makes them such an attractive choice of Conifer, so from the vibrant greens and golds above, we now highlight the blues and silvers:
Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Columnaris – conical shaped blue and silver foliaged trees that are wonderful as a specimen tree – the perfect punctuation in the border. They also create a very unusual and rather beautiful hedge, with densely packed foliage, planted in a row these make a very beautiful evergreen screen – these specimens are already 1.75-2m (5ft 8-6ft 6) tall and are supplied as a rootball.
In complete contrast these Chamaecyparis Pisifera Boulevard are also known as Blue Moss Cypress trees, displaying blue / green foliage but are trained as a garden bonsai. Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit this is another little treasure that will look amazing in UK gardens – very easy to keep in shape.
Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Ellwoodii Gold Pom Pom and
Known as Elwoods Cypress these trees in their two contrasting colour combinations are Niwaki specimens, trained as topiary pom pom shaped columns their striking shapes and colours provide so many possibilities as statement trees in garden designs. With a range of sizes from 1.5 metres – 3 metre specimens there is something for every budget here. Chamaecyparis Lawsoniana Ellwoodii has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit a fine indicator that these trees will perform well in UK gardens.

Chamaecyparis Pisifera Filifera Aurea and Pisifera Plumosa Aurea
A stunning low growing Conifer from Japan where it is grown for its highly prized wood. Chamaecyparis Pisifera Filifera Aurea is also known as the Sawara Cypress tree, displaying gorgeous golden foliage spreads and drapes forming a lovely dome shaped bush. Keeping its colouring throughout the winter months – this tree brings colour and form to the garden all year round. Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit – this will grow well in the UK climate.
Another of the Chamaecyparis Pisifera’s this garden bonsai tree has been created using the variety Chamaecyparis Pisifera Plumosa Aurea a beautiful specimen tree with golden / lime green foliage that will sing out in the garden. This Sawara Cypress is perfectly happy in a container as long as it is kept well watered and fed.
