Fraxinus Exelsior, also known as the Common Ash, is one of over 65 species of Ash tree all of which are hardy and fast growing. This is a large deciduous tree, particularly suitable for timber, which can reach an impressive 25 metres, but is more likely to reach eight metres in height and five in width within ten years when garden grown. Its foliage consists of a light green compound leaf which is made from several ‘leaflets’ along a stem. They are pinnate, grow in facing pairs, and measure up to 30 cm in length. There is often a single leaf at the tip of the shoot. Many people mistake the Common Ash for Rowan or Mountain Ash, however the Rowan has serrated leaves.

Before foliage appears in April, dark purple flowers bloom almost unnoticed at the very tips of its bare twigs. If pollinated they develop into large hanging seed bunches, called keys, in mid to late summer. In late summer and autumn these one winged helicopter seeds fall with the foliage which first turns a glorious pale yellow. In winter the Common Ash bears smooth twigs with black velvet buds on a strong architectural framework.

How Hardy Is Fraxinus Exelsior
Fraxinus Exelsior is fully hardy in all of the UK. It is frost, wind and pollution tolerant.

How To Use Fraxinus Exelsior
This tree is supplied as a Multi Stem Ash giving a more natural and wild appearance which is perfect for a wildlife garden or a specimen tree in the border or lawn. Its foliage makes a natural privacy screen and noise barrier in urban locations. Fraxinus Exelsior is a fast-growing large tree, so it needs plenty of room to stretch and grow. You can under plant it with shade-loving flowers or gravel as it is partially drought tolerant.

How To Care For Fraxinus Exelsior
This tree will grow in any type of soil, and particularly thrives in chalky areas. It needs no particular care, but because we deliver our Multi Stem Common Ash root-balled it should be planted straight away and watered until it’s established. A good thick layer of mulch in early spring will boost the foliage colours.

If you are looking for a low-maintenance yet magnificent native specimen tree that changes through the seasons, then a Common Ash is the perfect choice with its feathery pinnate leaves and interesting keys.
