Ajuga Reptans Golden Beauty or Bugle Golden Beauty
The Ajuga Reptans Golden Beauty is commonly referred to as the Bugle Golden Beauty. This evergreen perennial is an exceptionally hardy ground cover that maintains its golden-green variegated foliage year round. When fully grown the plant rarely exceeds 15 centimetres in height. Once established it tolerates foot traffic well which makes it an ideal ground cover to grow alongside walkways or between stepping stones.
In the early spring months, Ajuga Reptans Golden Beauty bursts forth with a bevy of bright blue flowers. The flower spikes rise above the low foliage to stand out in stark contrast to the golden-green leaves. Butterflies, moths, and bees find the blossoms exceptionally attractive.
Ajuga Reptans Golden Beauty grows in areas where other ground covers often fail to thrive. These tough, spreading plants can tolerate partial to full shade. They will also withstand overly moist soil conditions. Once established Bugle Golden Beauty can even stand up to periods of drought without withering up and dying as many other types of ground covers do when faced with excessively dry seasonal conditions.
Planting Bugle Golden Beauty across slopes helps control soil erosion. This perennial’s creeping growth and network of roots works like a net to hold eroding soil and rocks in place even during heavy rains.
The Bugle Golden Beauty’s short stature makes it a picturesque plant to highlight any border. The tough diminutive plants also do well when planted in containers and can be a cheerful addition to any potted flower arrangement. Deer and rabbits rarely browse on the golden-green foliage so it’s a good plant choice for any woodland garden.
Once established, the Ajuga reptans withstands temperatures that can dip close to or below freezing without suffering damage. Utilizing its creeping growth habit, the plants spread easily and tolerate being transplanted to other areas of the garden well.
Planting the gold and green Ajuga reptans is a great way to add colour to the garden. The uplifting foliage hues of the dainty plants look striking when planted against a green backdrop.
