Buxus Heritage
Evergreen Better Buxus Heritage is a new variety of blight-resistant box with dark green foliage. It’s considered a universal box suitable for hedging and topiary.
A Belgian plant breeder Herplant has released four new blight-resistant box hybrids. These new hybrids have been developed over a decade of research between Herplant and the research institute ILVO Flanders Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. The Betterbuxus series are resistant to the fungal box blight that has caused a big problem for Buxus growers in recent years. The four varieties are Heritage, Babylon Beauty, Renaissance, and Skylight.
Evergreen Buxus Heritage has dark evergreen foliage and is suitable for all buxus applications in the garden including topiary, hedging, dividing parterres, and patio containers. In spring its new light green growth is often accompanied by tiny pale flowers. The new growth gradually darkens to match the mature plant over several months. This new variety of blight-resistant box is a great choice for blight-hit areas and takes the place of traditional box varieties without any special treatment.
Height And Spread of Buxus Heritage
Blight resistant buxus Heritage can be kept to your preferred height and spread with 2-3 trims a year. It’s slow-growing and easy to maintain.
How Hardy is Buxus Heritage
Box is generally hardy and blight resistant buxus Heritage is no exception. It can withstand sub-zero UK temperatures if the roots are well-drained and is naturally resistant to blight. The Betterbuxus range can also withstand box tree caterpillar attack, regreening after specialist treatment has been applied.
How To Use Buxus Heritage
This universal disease-resistant box can be used around the garden in place of traditional box, yew, or holly. It thrives in borders, well-watered containers, and is pruning tolerant.
How To Care For Buxus Heritage
Blight resistant buxus Heritage will grow in the majority of soils if they are well-drained. It enjoys sunny to partially shady aspects and needs 2-3 trims a year to maintain its shape. There’s no need to use fungal treatments on Buxus Heritage as it’s bred for blight resistance although a thick layer of mulch in the spring and regular feeding with a specialist box food will encourage good health.
