Clematis Purpurea Plena Elegans - Purple Flowering Clematis with Double Headed Flowers
Viticella Clematis' are as tough as they come yet look incredibly elegant, they are an ideal choice for the first time Clematis grower. Originating from the southern Mediterranean, they will thrive and perform with profuse flowers during the hot summer months, fortunately they also do well in an English summer!
Clematis Viticella are coveted for their beautiful blooms during the 'tired' garden months of July and August and will provide your garden with a fabulous boost with their gorgeous colours.
This variety, Clematis Purpurea Plena Elegans has been adorning English bowers since the reign of Elizabeth 1. The relatively small flowers (around 5cm across) are a deep carmine/purple with an unusual double flower centre. Remember, Clematis are naturally woodland plants so do need you to provide a nice cool root space for them, if you must plant in full sun provide a couple of slates as a wigwam to cover the roots and keep them cool - off they will go rambling over anything you provide - trees, arbours, archways and giving a swathe of sumptuous colour as they go.
Growing tip: the Clematis Viticella's couldn't be easier to prune - just remember they flower on the new years growth, so in Springtime cut the previous years growth down to about a foot from the ground leaving the new growth to spurt on up. Then wait for the profusion of blossoms they'll reward you with in late summer right through to early Autumn.
RHS - Award of Garden Merit - sure sign it will perform well in most UK gardens
