view this plant size >Chamaecyparis Obtusa Tempelhof is a dwarf evergreen conifer bush with fan-shaped yellow-green foliage and winter tints of brown. It’s a top-notch choice for rockeries, architectural borders and low-maintenance spaces.
Chamaecyparis Obtusa is the Hinoki Cypress that’s native to Japan and Taiwan’s forests and is often used for topiary and cloud trees. It has distinctive drooping fan-shaped foliage.
Hinoki Cypress Tempelhof is a selection that retains Hinoki Cypress’s distinctive yellow-green branches, but it’s much smaller, transforming into a pointed dome shape as it matures. It was cultivated in 1964 by The Netherlands’ L Konjin & Company Tempelhof Nursery.
Tempelhof’s rich evergreen foliage sprays emerge yellow and cup-shaped eventually maturing into darker yellow-green. During the winter months, tints of bronzey-brown tinge the margins. It’s a superb choice of shrub for mixed borders and rockeries that need vertical interest.
Height and Spread of Chamaecyparis Obtusa Tempelhof
Chamaecyparis Obtusa Tsatsumi is a strong growing conifer that reaches a maximum height of one metre by 30 cms in width over 10 years.
How Hardy Is Chamaecyparis Obtusa Tempelhof
Tempelhof Cypress is hardy enough to withstand freezing UK winters if it’s grown in well-drained soil and receives full sun. It tolerates some drought and pollution too.
How To Use Chamaecyparis Obtusa Tempelhof
Rockeries and low-maintenance spaces benefit from Hinoki Cypress Tempelhof’s interesting cup-shaped sprays of yellow-green foliage. Because it doesn’t grow too large it can form the backbone of a rockery or mixed border where it provides winter colour and architectural shape. It can also be fashioned into an informal low hedge.
This dwarf conifer suits large, well-watered and fed containers, so it can be used to brighten up a balcony garden, deck or patio too.
How To Care For Chamaecyparis Obtusa Tempelhof
Tempelhof is easy to grow and requires very little, if any, maintenance.
It likes full sun, but will tolerate partial shade in well-drained but moist soil. It copes with exposed sites, chalk and sand, but it’s best to beef up the planting hole with extra compost and mulch if the soil is thin.
Mulch its roots thoroughly each spring and give new plants plenty of water until you can see new growth. Pruning isn’t required.
