Cestrum Nocturnum or Night Blooming Jasmine
A West Indies native, Cestrum Nocturnum is an evergreen shrub grown for its heavily perfumed blossoms. Also known as Night Blooming Jasmine, Night Jessamine and Lady of the Night, this exotic shrub has a spreading habit and glossy deep green foliage that stays on the shrub throughout the seasons. Its best feature, however, are its flowers which appear late in the spring and last into the autumn. The greenish-white, tubular blossoms are borne in clusters and open only at night (hence the name) closing with the dawn to reopen again the next evening. Night Blooming Jasmine exudes a musky, heady fragrance that will spread throughout the garden, making summer evenings all the more romantic and exotic. The flowers are followed by spherical, glossy, white fruit.

Height and Spread of Cestrum Nocturnum
With a moderate growth rate, Night Blooming Jasmine will achieve an ultimate mature height of up to 3 metres, with a spread of 1 to 2 metres maximum.

How Hardy is Cestrum Nocturnum
Originating in a sub-tropical climate, Night Blooming Jasmine prefers milder climates so it will do better in coastal areas and parts of the UK with gentler climates. Even though considered hardy, this evergreen shrub will appreciate sheltering and protection. It can withstand winter temperatures up to -5 degrees Celsius.

How To Use Cestrum Nocturnum
The rich and intoxicating fragrance of Night Blooming Jasmine is the main reason why gardeners choose this plant but it is also valued for its evergreen foliage and climbing habit. Grow it against a trellis or arbour or use it to cover up an ugly wall or fence. Grow it in pots to enjoy the lovely fragrance on your patio or roof terrace.

How To Care For Cestrum Nocturnum
Night Blooming Jasmine is virtually pest and disease free and not too particular about the growing conditions. This plant likes a sunny spot, but can thrive in dappled shade, too, and does best in fertile, well-drained soils. For best results, choose a spot that is sheltered both from harsh winds in the colder seasons and scorching summer sun.
