Pleached Viburnum Tinus Lucidum is a pleached evergreen tree with white flower sprays. It’s a good choice for above fence screening.
Viburnum Tinus Lucidum is native to the Mediterranean areas of Europe and North Africa, but it’s tough enough to grow in the UK climate and a popular choice for hedging.
The evergreen foliage of Viburnum Tinus Lucidum is oval and mid to dark glossy green. Pink buds appear in late winter which turn into flat white sprays in springtime. The sprays measure up to 10 cms in length and have a pleasant, sweet scent. The RHS have awarded Viburnum Tinus Lucidum the Perfect for Pollinators label. Flowers mature in small berries that the birds adore.
This variety is trained as a pleached tree. This means it has a single clear stem and a crown trained on a square framework. Pleached trees are excellent for privacy and noise reduction as the crown sits above a fence line.
Height and Spread of Pleached Viburnum Tinus Lucidum
If left to its own devices, Pleached Viburnum Tinus Lucidum will reach a height and spread of 4 metres over 10-20 years but can be kept smaller with regular pruning.
How Hardy Is Pleached Viburnum Tinus Lucidum
This is an extremely hardy plant that can withstand UK winters if the roots are well drained. Once established, it can cope with some drought and is rarely bothered by pests or disease.
How To Use Pleached Viburnum Tinus Lucidum
Pleached Viburnum Tinus Lucidum is an excellent choice for eye-catching above fence line screening. Its dense evergreen foliage blocks overlooking views all year round and it’s thick enough to dampen road noise when planted near traffic.
It can also be used to line a walkway, disguise an ugly outbuilding, or to create private shady areas around the garden – screening a gazebo or a seating area for example.
The blossom is pollinator friendly so pleached viburnum is a good choice for wildlife friendly gardens in need of shade and privacy.
How To Care For Pleached Viburnum Tinus Lucidum
Pleached Viburnum Tinus Lucidum grows best in full sun but it will tolerate partial shade and even full shade. In full shade it won’t flower as profusely.
It will grow in the majority of soils such as clay or sand and copes with a coastal position too.
To maintain the pleached shape, this tree will need a yearly prune. Clip back the longest shoots and tie whippy branches onto the training frame. Cut away dead or crossed branches and tidy up the main shape. This is best done after flowering.
Mulch the roots once a year and water well until established.
