Escallonia Darts Red or Escallonia Darts Rosy Red
Vigorous and evergreen, Escallonia Dart’s Rosy Red is grown for its glossy foliage and profusion of crimson red flowers in the summer. With an erect habit and attractive foliage that offers year-round interest, this cultivar is an ideal candidate for hedging. In the summer, this shrub is enveloped by masses of reddish pink flowers. Tubular when they appear, the blossoms unfold 5-petaled, with pale yellow pistils in the center. The small, oval leaves provide a contrasting backdrop that accentuates the colour of the blossoms and offers interest throughout the seasons.
When it comes to the planting and growing Escallonia Dart’s Red, you’ll find that this cultivar isn’t fussy. All this evergreen shrub needs to thrive is a sunny spot, sheltered from strong winds, and well-drained soil. Although you can plant this variety of Escallonia in partial shade, it won’t bloom as prolifically as it would in full sun. As it’s resistant to salt sprays, this shrub is a favourite in seaside gardens. Trouble-free and easy to care for, this cultivar generally has no problems with pests and diseases.
Native to Brazil, this evergreen flowering shrub performs best in milder climates. Fully hardy in Britain in Ireland, it prefers areas where winters are not too severe. Resistant to frost, although it might suffer from stem dieback if planted in an exposed location where cold winds can damage the plant. Considered a medium-sized shrub, this Escallonia cultivar can grow to be around 2.5 metres high and across.
With an upright habit and a fast growth rate, Escallonia Rosy Red is a great choice for hedges, especially in coastal areas, as it's not bothered by salty air. The evergreen foliage provides privacy and adds colour to the garden, especially in the summer, when the whole shrub is adorned with clusters of crimson flowers. Plant it en masse for a spectacular evergreen flowering hedge, or combine it with other Escallonia varieties (e.g. varieties Escallonia Iveyi or Escallonia Red Dream) for an evergreen hedge with a colourful display of summer flowers.
