Despite its name this St John Wort has a profusion of butter gold flowers with five petals and long spidery stamens in the summer months. Sometimes a second golden flush appears in late summer to early autumn. The name Magical Red in the name refers to its red stems and large red berries that develop in June and July. Left alone, the berries last until September or they can be cut and last for weeks in flower arrangements. The foliage is dark green, ovate and aromatic when crushed. Magical Red is a semi evergreen which means it may retain its leaves year-round in warmer parts of the UK. In colder areas the foliage turns orange and red before falling in autumn.
