Ilex Crenata Stokes is an evergreen thornless Japanese holly with tiny leaves. It’s an excellent box alternative for parterres or dividers and it can be trained into formal topiary shapes.

Ilex Crenata Stokes is better known as Japanese Holly Stokes. As its name suggests, Japanese Holly is native to North Asia where it grows in well-drained areas. The Stokes variety is a dwarf cultivar that naturally forms a compact mound of tiny oval green leaves that take well to topiary.

In spring its tiny white flowers attract pollinators, but this male holly will not develop berries.

Japanese Holly Stokes is a reliable evergreen box alternative that creates a splash of hardy colour all year round. It suits borders and plant containers equally. It is low growing and can be used for low hedging

Height And Spread of Ilex Crenata Stokes
This is a dwarf variety that reaches a maximum height of 90 cms and spreads approximately a metre over 5-10 years. Its growth is easily manageable.

How Hardy Is Ilex Crenata Stokes
Japanese Holly Stokes is very hardy if its roots are well-drained. It enjoys full sun and is drought tolerant once established. It’s not bothered by blight or box moth caterpillar and it’s salt tolerant.

How To Use Ilex Crenata Stokes
Japanese Holly Stokes will grow in the majority of gardens. It’s suitable for breezy, salt-laden coastal gardens and polluted front gardens in urban areas.

You can use this small evergreen to create low hedges, parterres, and screening, or clip it into topiarised shapes. It’s especially good at protecting flowers from wind damage and dividing gardens into different areas.
It will grow in a watered and fed container on a windy balcony, deck, or patio where it brings interesting shapes and colour all year-round.
As well as formal shapes, Japanese Holly Stokes can be left to grow wild in a low-maintenance garden. Its flowers provide food for pollinators and its dense branching foliage creates safe habitats for low nesting robins and small mammals.

How To Care For Ilex Crenata Stokes
Japanese Holly Stokes is easy to grow. It prefers well-drained soil in full sun but will tolerate partial shade as well. Choose a sheltered or exposed sunny spot on sand, clay, or loam, and water it well until it’s established.
This is a low-growing dwarf evergreen that you can leave to grow in a naturally pleasing shape, or trim to achieve parterres and topiary. For more formal shapes, trim back new growth once the flowers are spent and tidy it up as necessary.
For the healthiest plants, apply a thick layer of organic mulch to its roots in early spring to trap moisture and provide nutrients for the growing season.
