AGM plants have been through a rigorous trial and assessment programme by the RHS and are deemed:
Excellent for ordinary use in appropriate conditions/Available to buy/Of good constitution/Essentially stable in form & colour/Reasonably resistant to pests & diseases

Lavatera Thuringiaca Bredon Springs is an RHS AGM winning deciduous tree mallow that reaches 2.5 metres with long stems of pink trumpet flowers. It suits large borders and gravel gardens.

Lavatera Thuringiaca are part of the mallow family, vigorous shrubs native to Eastern Europe, Asia and Russia. The Bredon Springs cultivar is one of several RHS winning tree mallows bred with Malva Olbia, the Mediterranean mallow. Its full name is Lavatera × Clementii Bredon Springs.

Tree Mallow Bredon Springs has large grey-green downy leaves that grow at regular intervals along its 2.5 metre flexible stems. It is a fairly late grower, putting on most of its growth in May and June. In July through to September large pink trumpet-shaped flowers measuring 7 cms across emerge on the stems. Bumblebees love its large, easily accessed blooms.

In autumn the foliage and flowers drop to reveal a large well-stemmed bush that gradually dies down to its woody base in winter before springing up again the next year.

Tree Mallow Bredon Springs is a tough perennial that copes with drought and poorer soils. It’s a good choice for low maintenance spaces.

Height and Spread of Lavatera Thuringiaca Bredon Springs
Tree Mallow Bredon Springs will reach 2.5 metres in height and the same in spread.

How Hardy Is Lavatera Thuringiaca Bredon Springs
It’s a hardy shrub that can withstand UK winters. Ensure the roots are well drained and it will survive frost and snow. It’s fairly drought tolerant and is rarely attacked by pest or disease.

How To Use Lavatera Thuringiaca Bredon Springs
Due to its size Tree Mallow Bredon Springs is best in a mixed border where it has space to grow and display its beautiful flowers in summer. You can grow it in a container but it will need to be a very large and well-watered one.

Pretty pink flowers mean this tree mallow suits a cottage style garden or a gravel garden in need of height. It also suits low maintenance wildlife friendly spaces.

How To Care For Lavatera Thuringiaca Bredon Springs
This is a tough, perennial shrub that’s not fussy about soil type happily growing in chalk to clay if it’s well-drained.

It enjoys a sunny to partially shady spot and will struggle to flower in deep shade. A sheltered area will help protect the large delicate flowers from wind and rain.

In early spring cut the stems down to ground height and mulch well.
